What is the difference between the Kia Sorento and Sportage?
The main difference is size: the Kia Sorento is a midsize SUV with a standard third row, while the Kia Sportage is a compact SUV with two rows and seating for five. Both are built by Kia, and both offer gas, hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions. The Sorento gives you more seats and more towing, while the Sportage gives you a smaller footprint and higher hybrid mpg.
Jenkins Kia of Cocoa is a Kia dealership in Cocoa, Florida, and these two SUVs are among the most compared models on our lot. This guide uses Kia's published specifications and EPA ratings. Sorento and hybrid figures are for the 2026 model year. Sportage gas figures apply to both 2026 and 2027, since Kia says the 2027 gas Sportage is largely a carryover.
Kia Sorento vs. Sportage at a glance
The table below compares the two SUVs on the specs shoppers ask about most.
Figures come from Kia's media specifications and fueleconomy.gov. Always confirm details on the window sticker of the exact vehicle.
Is the Sorento bigger than the Sportage?
Yes, the Sorento is bigger than the Sportage. It is about 5 inches longer and adds a third row, so it can carry six or seven people instead of five. That extra row is the biggest reason families move up to the Sorento.
The Sportage makes up ground with a roomy second row. Kia lists 41.3 inches of rear legroom in the Sportage, and its cargo area holds 39.6 cu. ft. behind the rear seats. With the seats folded, the Sportage offers up to 74.1 cu. ft., close to the Sorento's 75.5 cu. ft.
Which has more cargo room day to day?
The answer depends on how many people ride along. With all seats up, the Sorento has just 12.6 cu. ft. behind its third row, while the Sportage has 39.6 cu. ft. behind its second row. With the Sorento's third row folded, Kia lists 38.5 to 45.0 cu. ft. behind its second row, which beats the Sportage.
Which gets better gas mileage, Sorento or Sportage?
The Sportage gets better gas mileage than the Sorento in every matching powertrain. The 2026 Sportage Hybrid with front-wheel drive earns an EPA-estimated 42 mpg combined (the 2027 version is rated at 41), compared with 37 mpg combined for the front-wheel-drive Sorento Hybrid. The gas Sportage is rated at 28 mpg combined with FWD, versus 26 mpg for the Sorento's base 2.5L engine.
For drivers commuting from Rockledge or Viera to the Space Coast's job centers, those few mpg add up over a year. Your actual mileage will vary with driving habits and conditions.
How do the engines compare?
The engines compare closely at the base level, but the Sorento offers more power at the top. Here is how each lineup is built, per Kia:
-
Sportage gas: a 2.5L four-cylinder rated at 187 hp and 178 lb.-ft.
-
Sorento gas: a 191-hp 2.5L on LX and S, and a 281-hp turbo on EX and above.
-
Hybrids: the Sportage Hybrid makes 232 hp, and the Sorento Hybrid makes 227 hp.
-
Plug-in hybrids: both are rated at 268 hp with AWD. Kia lists up to 34 miles of electric range for the 2026 Sportage PHEV and up to 31 miles for the 2026 Sorento PHEV.
The federal EV tax credit ended for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025, so plan your budget without it.
Do the Sorento and Sportage both come as hybrids?
Yes, both the Sorento and Sportage come as hybrids and plug-in hybrids. The Sportage Hybrid is offered in more trims, from LX up to SX Prestige for 2026. The Sorento Hybrid comes in EX and SX Prestige grades for 2026.
Which one tows more?
The Sorento tows more. Kia lists 3,500 lbs. with the towing package on turbo Sorento trims, with up to 4,500 lbs. offered as an option on top turbo grades, when properly equipped. The gas Sportage is rated at 2,500 lbs. with trailer brakes. Confirm ratings and equipment for your specific vehicle before you tow.
What should I check on a Sorento and Sportage test drive?
Check how each SUV fits your real routine, not just the spec sheet. Bring the gear and the people you carry most often, then use this quick list:
-
Car seats: install them in the second row of both SUVs and check third-row access in the Sorento.
-
Cargo: load a stroller, cooler or beach chairs to see which cargo area fits better.
-
Parking: try both in a tight lot to feel the Sportage's shorter length.
-
Highway merge: compare the Sorento's turbo with the Sportage Hybrid on a short stretch of highway.
-
Tech: pair your phone in each and test the screens and controls you will use daily.
Both SUVs come with AWD options, and Kia made Terrain Mode standard on every AWD 2026 Sorento. If you drive sandy beach access roads or rain-soaked streets after summer storms, ask us to show you how each AWD system works.
Which Kia SUV is right for you?

Choose the Sorento if you need a third row, plan to tow a small boat or camper, or want turbo power. Choose the Sportage if you carry five or fewer, want the best hybrid mileage, or prefer a shorter SUV that is easier to park at busy Cocoa Beach lots. Both offer gas, hybrid and plug-in hybrid choices.
